A woman lies awake covering her ears while her partner snores

Treating snoring starts with finding out why it happens, because loud nightly snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea. At A-Z Sleep & Airway Center in Glen Allen, Dr. Ashlee Goodman-Tabari begins with a simple home sleep test, then fits a comfortable custom device that helps you breathe quietly through the night.

The cost of treating snoring depends on its cause and the right solution for you. It varies with the home sleep test used to rule out sleep apnea, your custom oral appliance, and the number of fittings and follow-up adjustments. We'll give you an exact quote at your consultation. Quiet the snoring, protect your sleep

Our approach

How we treat snoring, step by step

Snoring is easy to joke about and hard to live with. It disrupts your sleep, keeps a partner awake, and is one of the most common reasons couples end up in separate rooms. Our approach starts with finding out what kind of snoring you have.

First, find out if it is more than snoring

Loud, nightly snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, and you cannot tell the two apart from the sound alone. A simple home sleep test, read by a sleep physician, gives you a clear answer. If sleep apnea is part of the picture, your treatment plan accounts for it.

Look at what is narrowing your airway

Snoring has a physical cause. Jaw shape, tongue position, a narrow arch, mouth breathing and sleep position can all leave less room for air to move. At your visit, we take a digital scan and a 3D image so we can look closely at your bite and airway.

A custom device that opens the airway

For many people, a custom oral appliance is the most comfortable fix. It holds your lower jaw slightly forward so the soft tissue in your throat stays out of the way, which quiets snoring at its source. It is small, silent and easy to travel with, and it is made from a scan of your own mouth.

Adjusted until the nights are quiet

We fit your appliance, then fine-tune it over follow-up visits. Many people notice quieter nights soon after they start wearing it, and we keep adjusting until the result holds for you and for whoever shares your room.

Why not a drugstore mouthpiece?

Store-bought mouthpieces are molded at home without anyone checking the fit. They cannot rule out sleep apnea, and a poor fit can shift your teeth or change your bite over time. A professionally fitted appliance is safer, and it comes with real follow-up care.

Help for the whole household

Partners often notice the snoring first, and many patients come in because someone else asked them to. That outside observation is a useful clue, and treating snoring well usually means better rest for everyone under the roof. Partners are always welcome to join the visit.
